Zero Emissions Building

The challenge…

Humanity is experiencing the effects of collective past choices in the form of climate change. More people are now aware of the impact of their own lifestyles on the planet. Everyone can play their part in turning things around with a reduction in consumption and more considered choices generally. We accept that things are more complex, but we can still all make a collective difference by making better choices individually.

Our approach…

We seek to use the Minimum Intervention to get the Maximum Effect. This approach comes from the founding Director’s research in the 1990’s that set out designs for deconstruction (’92), a circular economy (‘93/4), living green facades, growing crops on rooftops using hydroponics and 10-minute neighbourhoods (‘96/7). This environmental approach is still at the heart of our designs but requires likeminded clients. We endeavour to maximise the positive impact of every project.

Our solution…

We are delighted to have successfully gained approval for an ‘off-grid’ / ‘zero emissions’ home. It will meet 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources. The carbon footprint will be further reduced with site-recycled timber, locally quarried stone and other long-life materials that can be recycled at the end of life. A Client’s values are embodied in the buildings they commission and so greatly influence their impact on the planet.
